"So that's what Boston will always be to me - bigger than life."
Why Scott Hamilton is being honored at an event for Boston sports legends.
I teased this in my last newsletter, and it’s finally here!
A few Fridays ago, Scott Hamilton and I spent an hour on Microsoft Teams chatting about his career, his love of and ties to Boston (there are a lot), and the current state of skating. The result is a story for the Boston Globe about his upcoming induction to The Tradition, which is considered a Boston sports hall-of-fame. You can read it here.
In addition, Hamilton, reigning World Champion Ilia Malinin and 2016 World silver medalist Ashley Wagner were in Boston last week to promote March 2025’s World Figure Skating Championships at the TD Garden. I have a story about that as well.
Malinin’s goes Xtreme
While at the Worlds press event, I asked Malinin about his Xtreme Ice World Premiere event on Friday in Leesburg, VA.
“It's kind of a little different than all the usual ice shows,” said Malinin. “We want to show extreme ice (skating.) It's really all about the acrobatics and aerial acts. It's going to be a lot of fun. There will be a lot of stunts. It's going to be really cool. It's going to be really different from normal ice show.”
Coming soon to Boston
Another important left over from the Worlds press event: Doug Zeghibe, CEO and Executive Director, The Skating Club of Boston, said that after these World Championships, the club’s next goal is to get the 2030 U.S. Figure Skating Championships to Boston, which will serve as the 2030 Olympic Trials.
I also learned of a long-beloved skating event returning to Boston this spring, but my lips are sealed at the moment. Stay tuned…
